Young people

Foyer programmes

Through our foyers we work with a wide range of young people, all of whom are at risk of homelessness. Some of our young foyer residents may come from chaotic backgrounds, but our foyers give them the opportunity to live in a secure and safe environment where they can learn to live independently, continue their education, and look for employment.  We offer a range of courses and opportunities which provide the skills and experience our foyer residents need to deal with daily life, reach their full potential and achieve their own personal goals and ambitions. Courses include a six week self awareness program, a four week citizenship course, basic skills assessments and examination in numeracy and literacy, drug awareness workshops, accredited art programmes and a range of employment and training courses.

We also run a comprehensive annual program of courses and activities to support young people with mental health needs across Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackney.

Working Assets

Working Assets is a programme run by the Foyer Federation with the aim of improving young people's employability outcomes by developing their skills, assets and talents for the world of work.

East Thames, in partnership with the Foyer Federation and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, has been running the Working Asset programme in Barking Foyer to enourage residents to consider a career in engineering.

Residents taking part in the programme have learnt about the automotive industry by visiting Ford Dagenham Engine Plant to gain an insight into the workplace and get hands on experience. Through workshops held over six months they have gained valuable team building and interview skills which will help them prepare for employment.

Estate intervention

Our youth programmes extend beyond our foyers to the neighbourhoods in which we work. In partnership with our neighbourhood managers, who each look after a particular estate or patch, we run programmes for young people to keep them active, entertained and out of trouble. We can also provide one to one mentoring support for those who need a little extra help.
